ABOUT HERNIA
INTERVERTEBRAL HERNIA: CAUSES AND SYMPTOMS
Intervertebral hernia occurs in the result of various back injuries, incorrect posture; affection on the spine from weightlifting, various spinal injuries when falling, turning sharply, the obesity can also effect the spine, etc… All this has a huge impact on the spine.
Thus, intervertebral hernia occurs in a variety of situations, in which the jelly-like substance inside the disc touches nearby nerves and compresses them.
The spinal disc consists of an outer wall, annulus fibrosus (AF), made up of fibrous tissues and the inner wall, gelatinous nucleus pulposus (NP), made up of a jellylike center nucleus. Over time, these walls may weaken, which can cause serious injuries.
It contributes to a number of unpleasant symptoms such as back and groin pain, numbness in the legs, muscle pain and paresthesia (abnormal sensation, burning or prickling, this occurs when a part of the body is in a compressed position). However, this symptom can be mild or even absent. We would also like to add that when the intervertebral hernia increase in size, the pain becomes severe, it can even affect different parts of the body – thigh, leg, ankle, shoulder, depending in which part of the spine the intervertebral hernia occurs.
